Rhode Island Organizations and Programs

Centro International de Capacitacion Integral educates emerging leaders in the Hispanic community.

The Champlin Foundations provides grants to nonprofit organizations, substantially all in Rhode Island, mostly for capital needs. 

The Knowledge Exchange Center of Rhode Island provides social and human service professionals with a support network for knowledge exchange, as well as resources and training.

Leadership Rhode Island helps emerging leaders gain knowledge and access to resources.

New Roots Providence supports small organizations with four focus areas: prisoner families; ex-prisoners; endangered youth; and welfare to work. It does this through training, grants, and facilitating peer learning.

The Newport Initiative for Nonprofit Leadership is strengthens organizational capacity through workshops, training programs, and technical assistance devoted to staff and organizational development.

The Providence Public Library houses a core collection of Foundation Center materials, including the online Foundation Directory with information on more than 80,000 grantmakers.

The Rhode Island College Certificate Program in Nonprofit Studies trains nonprofit professionals.

Rhode Island Community Jobs is an email list of nonprofit and public interest job opportunities.

Social Venture Partners Rhode Island links engaged philanthropists with innovative nonprofits to strengthen their organizations through the launch of mission-related social enterprises.

The United Way of Rhode Island invests in four crucial areas: connecting more people to the services that can help them; building affordable homes and reducing homelessness; increasing job skills, and supporting success in school.

Volunteer Center of Rhode Island promotes volunteerism, connects volunteers to opportunities, and builds nonprofit capacity through training and consultation.

Regional Organizations

The Executive Service Corps of New England provides nonprofits with affordable management consultants.

The Technical Development Corporation is a consulting and research group dedicated to improving nonprofits’ business and management skills.

Third Sector New England provides capacity building services that help nonprofits and the nonprofit sector engage people in community and public life. Their Executive Transitions Program places expert transition consultants and interim executive directors to help organizations strategize and search for new leadership.

National Organizations

The Alliance for Nonprofit Management is devoted to improving nonprofit management and governance. The Alliance holds a major annual conference and hosts a database of nonprofit consultants. 

The American Society of Association Executives & The Center for Association Leadership produce conferences, publish journals, and provide tools and resources.

Board Source strengthens boards of directors through consulting, publications, and tools.

The Bridgespan Group provides strategy consulting and shares knowledge. Their Bridgestar initiative helps nonprofits nurture strong leadership teams.

CompassPoint Nonprofit Services is a consulting, research, and training organization providing nonprofits with management tools, strategies, and resources to lead change in their communities. Its research has had a major effect on nonprofit practices nationwide.

The ePhilanthropy Foundation helps large and small nonprofit organizations utilize the best Internet practices to build relationships and raise money. The Foundation offers more than 50 on-line courses.

The Foundation Center,with 600 supporting foundations, is the nation’s leading resource connecting nonprofits to grantmakers. The Center maintains five regional libraries of grant programs.

The Nonprofit Center at Idealist.org is packed with news and innovative programs.

IKnow is a clearinghouse for links to web sites on nonprofit information.

Independent Sector is committed to research, national advocacy, nonprofit support, and convening nonprofit leaders.

Innovation Network helps nonprofits and funders measure results, make informed decisions, and create lasting social change. They provide consulting, training, and web-based tools.

The Nonprofit Risk Management Center provides assistance and resources for nonprofit organizations.

St. Paul Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits provides management consulting services to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in Minnesota. Their website includes tools and a comprehensive inventory of national support organizations.

General Web Libraries

The Association for Community Organization & Social Administration – a membership organization of community organizers, nonprofit administrators, policy practitioners, and educators – links to websites on more than 25 capacity-building topics.

Capaciteria, sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is a free service to help nonprofits find capacity-building resources.

The Free Management Library is one of the world’s largest collections of organizational leadership and management resources. The site also offers diagnostic tools.

The Nonprofit Gateway is a network of links to Federal government information and services. 

The Philanthropic Capacity Building Resources Database at the Human Interaction Research Institute describes almost 400 capacity-building programs.

Technology Needs

Citizen Speak is a free email advocacy service for grassroots organizations.

The Community Technology Center Network is a national membership organization of more than 450 independent community technology centers where people get free or low-cost access to computers and computer-related technology.

Google for Nonprofits has a number of tools to help nonprofit organizations promote their work, operate effectively, and raise money.

NPower NY is a regional office of a national nonprofit that provides affordable assistance to nonprofit organizations, enabling them to strategically use technology that supports their mission.

TechSoup is dedicated to helping nonprofits enhance productivity through sustainable technology. The site offers free information, resources, support, and a portal to donated and discounted technology products.
